CHAN 1 [Abstract] : This paper is a qualitative research investigating the young bettors of soccer gaming in Hong Kong. A total of 20 young bettors, aged between 16 to 26, were clinically interviewed and a battery of psychological tests were given to the participants. Descriptive statistics indicated that young bettors usually bet a comparatively large amount of their salary in gaming. Some gambled up to 650% of their monthly salaries. Psychological analysis of the interview data indicated that most of the young bettors were impulsive, risk-taking and were willing to take comparatively larger share of risk when compared to older gamblers. Peer learning might be a factor for the risk-taking behavior. Further, the available data demonstrated that young people might emotionally attached to soccer and soccer betting might well be an attachment object for these young workers, who find little attachment from their jobs and family. In other words, betting might be a means for one’s chief motivation in life. The results of the present studies were reviewed with the available literature in attachment and psychology.
