This volume intends to present FIDIS excellence to an interdisciplinary academic public. FIDIS is an EU-funded network of excellence that works around the Future of Identity in the Information Society (see www.fidis.net), achieving an interdisciplinary perspective – bringing together experts from 24 European research institutes and a variety of scientific disciplines. The volume aims to put profiling on the agenda of computer scientists, social scientists, lawyers, philosophers and others, by presenting a multifocal perspective that provides serious insight into profiling while also grounding it in its societal context. In order to create cross-disciplinary perspectives the volume consists of a set of main contributions with replies in order to generate discussion and/or provide another perspective (often from another discipline).
