Abstract
Bambuina bambui, a new genus and species of phalangopsid cricket, is described from Gruta do Centenário, a quartzite
cave located in Serra do Inficionado (Inficionado Ridge), a subset of mountains belonging to the Serra do Caraça (Caraça
Ridge) complex in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Introduction
According to Desutter-Grandcolas (1995), the biogeographic region with the highest number of cave-dwelling
crickets is the neotropics, especially Central America, where species belonging to six genera are found in caves of
the mainland: Paracophus Chopard, 1947; Tohila Hubbell, 1938; Longuripes Desutter-Grandcolas, 1993;
Arachnopsita Desutter-Grandcolas & Hubbell, 1993; Mayagryllus Desutter-Grandcolas & Hubbell, 1993; and
Noctivox Desutter-Grandcolas & Hubbell, 1993. One genus is found in Cuba: Cophus Saussure, 1874. The genus
Amphiacusta Saussure, 1874, endemic to the Greater and Lesser Antilles also has cave-dwelling representatives
(Desutter-Grandcolas & Otte, 1997).
Regarding South America, Desutter-Grandcolas (1995) describes Anophtalmotes, with species from Chile and
Venezuela, and mentions the following four genera with species collected from caves: Aclodes Hebard, 1928;
Endecous Saussure, 1878; Dyscophogryllus (Rehn, 1901)—and Phalangopsis Serville, 1831. To these it should be
added: Eidmanacris Chopard (1956) and Strinatia Chopard, 1970. Species of Palpigera Hebard, 1928 and
Melanotes Desutter-Grandcolas, 1993 are also known to spend daytime in smaller soil burrows such as armadillo
galleries (Desutter-Grandcolas, 1993; de Mello, personal observation).
Here we describe a new genus and species of phalangopsid cricket belonging to Desutter’s (1990) “Group C”
of the Luzarinae. The species was found in a quartzite cave named "Gruta do Centenário", located in the
surroundings of Mariana and Catas Altas, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
