İran Cumhurbaşkanlığı Seçimi: Statüko ya da İtidalli Değişim Iran’s Presidential Election: Between Status Quo and Moderate Change Bayram SİNKAYA Abstract The election of Hojjatoleslam Hassan Rohani as the new president of Iran on June 14 was a surprise for most of the analysts who underestimated differences between the competitors. The election atmosphere had be- come relatively colorless after the Guardian Council vetoed most of the pretentious election hopefuls. How- ever, the established political factions repositioned themselves to make association with the few candidates. Thereby, the ostensibly colorless race turned into a competition between competing factions advocating the status quo, radicalism and moderate change. The pragmatic conservative politician Rohani succeeded to win more than fifty percent of the votes by promising ‘moderation. ’ The extension of support by the reform- ist faction that promotes republicanism within the Islamic Republic and moderation of politics and foreign policy was very critical in the election victory of Rohani. Arguably, both the Islamic Republic regime and most of the Iranian people have chosen a ‘moderate change’ under the direction of Rohani. This moderate change, however, is very sensitive and depends on the moderation of attitude by the international commu- nity towards Iran.
