ABSTRACT
Introduction: Malocclusion like deep overbite is now recognized as potential contributors to the periodontal disease
process when they cause occlusal traumatism.
Case report: The present report illustrates a case where increased occlusal forces due to traumatic deep bite had led
to a combined periodontal lesion consisting of dehiscence and lateral periradicular defect in relation to right
maxillary central incisor. This lesion appeared on radiograph as a lateral circumscribed radiolucency, remote from
alveolar crest and close to apex. T-scan III
®
, a computerized occlusal analysis system was used for diagnosis of
increased occlusal forces. Regenerative periodontal surgery was performed for the resolution of periodontal defect.
Discussion: The lesion was aggravated by trauma is established from the fact that a localized pocket was present on
buccal aspect of right maxillary central incisor, with no interproximal bone loss in relation to aforementioned tooth.
Additionally, occlusal analysis by T scan also confirmed highest amount of occlusal force on right maxillary
central incisor. Conclusion: An association between deep overbite and a discrete lateral periodontal defect was
observed. Surgical periodontal regenerative treatment by collagen membrane and hydroxyapatite graft led to
complete resolution of the lesion.
