The nobility of Spain under Alfonso XIII* José Miguel HERNÁNDEZ BARRAL University Complutense, Madrid Department of Modern History hernandezbarral@yahoo.es SUMMARY During the reign of Alfonso XIII the number of ennoblements was very high, especially from 1914 onwards. The process of ennobling is of great interest due to the strategies that it employed; by the monarch, who tried to create references across the country and, by those interested in being made noble who yearned for a title. The study of these ennoblements draws us to a social group who are almost always forgotten in Spanish historiography and who did not remain on the margin of modernisation. Key words: Nobility, Delegation of the Nobility, Block of power, Cosmopolitanism, Alfonso XIII. *This present investigation was presented in the Seminar of Investigation of the department of Modern History, University Complutense in May 2008.
