The last are chains, plane or space grids of inorganic molecules connected by covalent bonds. In general, the geopolymers consist alumo-silicate component (metakaolin, fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, zeolite and other) and so called alkaline activator (sodium hydroxide, water soluble glass, sodium carbonate, calcium hydroxide or their blends). After the mixing of raw materials, the degradation of alumo-silicate structure begins, followed by polycondensation, coupled with release of water which does not participate in reactions but only assures the necessary workability. The geopolymers have great fire resistance (over 1300 o С), excellent sulfate resistance, high acid resistance (due to lack of high calcium phase) and good adhesion to concrete and steel. This determines the number of effective options for building applications - mortars, concrete, adhesives, protective coatings, thermal insulation materials and some special composite materials.
