Mandal*, Arun B. Patel College of Fisheries, CAU (I), Lembucherra, Tripura (W) 799210, India (Received 4.7.12, Accepted 31.8.12) Key words: Poecilia reticulata, lipid source, growth, survival, reproductive performance Abstract The effect of different lipid sources on the growth and reproductive performance of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) were studied using four experimental diets: (a) a basal feed, and the basal feed including (b) 4% cod liver oil, (c) 4% sunflower oil, or (d) 2%cod liver oil+2%sunflower oil. The diets were fed to broodfish for four months. The mean weight gain and specific growth rate were highest in fish fed the diet containing both oils, but did not significantly differ from fish fed the cod liver oil diet. The highest broodfish survival was obtained with the cod liver oil diet, but it did not differ from survival of fish fed the diet containing both oils. The number of offspring produced per female was significantly higher with the diet containing both oils but relative fecundity did not differ between treatments. All three supplemented diets resulted in significantly higher fry production than the basal diet. The highest percent fry survival was obtained with the diet containing both oils, but it did not significantly differ from fry survival in fish fed the sunflower oil diet. In conclusion, the diets incorporating cod liver oil or cod liver+sunflower oil were best for growth and survival of guppy, while the diet incorporating cod liver+sunflower oil was best for reproductive performance.
