International Journal for Behavioral Science & Management Vol. 3 No. 2 Awareness of Pension Schemes among Unorganized Sector: An Empirical Study Dr. S Venkatesh* Vanishree M R** October 2013 Abstract Pension and its reforms have become worldwide debatable today because of its magnifying effects on economic and social growth of a nation, trying to find an answer for ‘Ageing population’ Crisis. It is quite surprising to note that, in recent decade pension reforms around the world has focused mainly on organized sector; leaving a major portion of the unorganized sector workers without any effective structured pension arrangements-particularly in a developing country like India. The serious problems faced by these groups are often poverty, illiteracy, low income earnings, vulnerable to economic volatility and social changes. The present study is an attempt in addressing the old age support issues in a micro perspective on reaching the unreached. The present study is focused towards understanding the awareness level of unorganized workers about the various old age pension schemes provided by the Government of India, and their willingness to participate for voluntary contribution for old age. This in turn will project plausible resolutions from the grass root level to touch the untouched segment of population through micro pension schemes and financial literacy. This paper will comprehensively analyze the problem and highlight the appropriate gaps in the system through an empirical study in Bangalore city.
