1 Painted ceramics of Hallstatt period cemetery at Domasław, site 10/11/12, distr. Wrocław E xcavation works at Domasław sites no. 10/11/12, distr. Wrocław, were carried out in the years 2006-2008 on the area designated for the construction of Wrocław Motorway Bypass. The research was conducted by the Rescue Archaeo- logical Research Team of Late Ancient and Early Me- dieval Culture Research Centre of the Institute of Ar- chaeology and Ethnology of Polish Academy of Sci- ences (PAN), under the supervision of prof. Bogusław Gediga, PhD (Żygadło 2011). In the south-western part of the Domasław, site 10/11/12, 1028 pits from the Early Iron Age cemetery were excavated, including 790 cremation burials and 68 objects containing vessels without bones display- ing varying degree of damage. A signiicant discovery made in the cemetery was the identiication of nearly 300 graves with internal structures in the form of wooden chambers. 27 graves were surrounded by cir- cular ditches. The unique burial architecture, the number and variety of articles constituting the funerary content, i.e., ceramic vessels, the products made of bronze and iron (tools, weaponry, decorations), as well as the ar- tifacts made of amber, glass, and gold, all distinguis the cemetery in Domasław from the other sites situat- ed not only in Poland, but also in Central Europe. The analyses revealed that this region was intensively uti- lized by a society characterised by extensive contacts with the most important cultural centers of Central Europe at that time. The sources obtained from the conducted analyses allow for a completely new look at the picture of material culture and the changes arising within the social structure. They led, among others, to putting forward the concept of treating the Silesia region, part of Greater Poland, and perhaps Kujawy as a regional north-eastern province of Hall- statt culture (Gediga 2007a, 4, 2007b, 124, 2010a, 78, 2010b, 211). Thus the cemetery in Domasław becomes a representative site for this cultural unit. Among the artefacts included in the grave goods, painted ceramics is especially noteworthy. What is important, more than 350 painted wares were recon- structed, which makes it the largest collection of this kind of artefacts in Poland.
