Being there or being elsewhere 1 BEING THERE OR BEING ELSEWHERE: ON SITE VS. REMOTE INTERPRETING A CASE STUDY WITHIN INTERPRETER TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS Marco António Furtado (mfurtado@iscap.ipp.pt / marco.acm.furtado@gmail.com) Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do Porto (ISCAP / IPP) Abstract Experimental studies concerning remote interpreting (RI) have revealed that professional interpreters prefer the traditional on site interpreting (OSI), having a less positive attitude towards the most recent variant of interpreting. Interpreters working under RI conditions have to deal, for instance, with the technological paraphernalia involved, and with a strong feeling of alienation, which is considered to have a negative influence on their performance. New technologies also had an impact on translation and interpreting studies. Interpreter training under RI conditions is considered to be fundamental nowadays. This paper is mainly devoted to evaluate the interpreting quality and to reveal whether there are significant differences between the performance of two groups of interpreter trainees, after an interpreting exercise done under both OSI and RI conditions. Keywords: interpreting studies and education; experimental studies; on site interpreting; remote interpreting; teleconferencing; interpreter training.
