Transport Research Arena 2014, Paris Operation and safety of tramways in interaction with public spaces - COST Action TU1103 Laetitia FONTAINE a , Giuseppe INTURRI b* a STRMTG, Grenoble, France b University of Catania, Catania, Italy Abstract Light Rail Transit (LRT) is used in many countries all over the world, particularly in Europe. Some networks have a very long experience and others are (re)discovering LRTs, with high inconsistencies in terms of institutional and economical contexts, safety management, operational monitoring and technical solutions. The European COST Action “Operation and safety of tramways in interaction with public space”, aims at a better understanding of LRT’s safety and at reducing the number and the gravity of accidents between LRT and public space users through a better insertion in urban spaces. The first Work Phase concerns the state of the art context exploration on: tramways’ institutional and regulatory aspects, data collection on accidents and finally, infrastructure design. WP1’s outcomes will be presented and a Second and Third Work Phases will follow, focusing on comparisons and analysis, then prospects and recommendation. Résumé Les systèmes ferroviaires légers sont exploités dans de nombreux pays dans le monde, notamment en Europe. Certains réseaux ont une très longue expérience tandis que d’autres (re)découvrent le tramway, avec une grande variété en termes de contextes institutionnels et économiques, de management de la sécurité, d’exploitation et de solutions techniques. L’Action européenne COST « Exploitation et sécurité des tramways en interaction avec l’espace public » vise à une meilleure compréhension de la sécurité et à réduire le nombre et la gravité des accidents entre les tramways et les autres usagers de l’espace public via une meilleure insertion urbaine. La première phase de l’Action, dont nous présentons ici les résultats, concerne l’état de l’art sur : les aspects institutionnels et réglementaires, la collecte des données accidents et enfin, l’aménagement d’une ligne de tramway. Une seconde et troisième phases suivront, portant sur des comparaisons et analyses, puis enfin des recommandations. Ce projet est financé par la European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST).
