van Leeuwen/Stins Perceiving Information Page 1 Perceivable Information or: The happy marriage between Ecological Psychology and Gestalt Cees van Leeuwen, & John Stins University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands 1 Abstract The ecological realist concept of information as environmental specification is discussed. It is argued that affordances in ecological realism could, in principle, rest on a notion of partial specificiation of environmental circumstances. For this aim, a notion of Gestalt quality as a hierarchical structure of affordances would have to be adopted. It is claimed that such an account could provide a promising way to deal with problems of intentionality in perception and action, awareness and problem solving. 1 Correspondence should be addressed to Cees van Leeuwen, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Vakgroep Psychonomie, Faculteit der Psychologie, Roetersstraat 15, 1018 WB Amsterdam.
