BIRCH’S POLITICAL THEORY Hüseyin BAL • Öz Millet, kendisini ortak dil, kültür, din, tarih, toprak ve ata ile özdeletiren bir insanlar topluluudur. Siyasal bir ideoloji olarak milletçilik ise, milletin siyasal amaç ve hedefler dorultusunda seferber edilmesidir. Bu çalımada, milliyetçilik kavram ve ideolojisi, bu konudaki en yetkin siyasal teorisyenlerden biri olan ve konuyu “ulus ina etme süreci” ve “ulusal bütünleme” kavramları çerçevesinde ele alan Anthony H. Birch’in görüleri ııında ele alınarak irdelenecektir. Ona göre bugün hepimiz sınırları içinde ikamet ettiimiz milli devletin siyasi otoritesi altında yaamakta olmamıza ramen, milliyetçilik kavramı konusunda yaygın bir yanlı anlama söz konusudur. Abstract A nation is a group that identifies itself as based on a shared understanding of a common language, culture, religion, history, land, and descent. Nationalism as a political ideology is the mobilization of a nation in pursuit of political goals. In this study, the concept and ideology of nationalism has been examined and scrutinized in the light of Anthony H. Birch’s views, who is among the most competent political theorist on this subject and who has treated it in terms of ‘nation building process’ and ‘national integration’ concepts. For him, while in the contemporary world we all live under the political authority of the national state within whose borders we reside, today there’s a common misunderstanding about nationalism term.
