207 ARQUITECTURA DE LUÍS BARRAGÁN: apropriação e influências na contemporaneidade Ana Maria Tavares Martins*, Ana Lídia Virtudes* e Mafalda Teixeira de Sampayo** *Centro de Estudos Arnaldo Araújo (CEAA/ESAP) e Universidade da Beira Interior - Departamento de Engenharia Civil e Arquitectura (UBI/DECA), Portugal **Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE/IUL), Escola de Tecnologias e Arquitectura - Departamento de Arquitectura e Urbanismo, Portugal Abstract The work of Luis Barragán (1902-1988, born in Guadalajara, Mexico) may be considered a landmark in the interception that the modern movement has come to represent in the history of architecture. This interception is characterized by two dimensions. On the one hand, the appropriations that the modern movement has had, on the other hand, those of which it has been object. In 1980, Luis Barragán was awarded the Pritzker, and his acceptance speech was his architectural statement, which could also be seen as a manifesto. This understanding is based not only in its architecture, but also on the elements that any architect, regardless of their architectural language, should value as a means for the preparation of their projects. In this context, this article has as its main objectives to reflect on: 1. The influences and appropriations of the Modern Movement in the Luis Barragán architecture not only because of its synthesis of the Mexican culture, appropriating references of its country. But also because of the rationalist and functionalist influences absorbed from the contact with European architects such as Le Corbusier. 2. The influences and appropriations, especially in the mature period, of the work of Luis Barragán in contemporary architecture such as in the case of references like Eduardo Souto Moura, in his projects of dwellings or like Tadao Ando’s work on liturgical equipments. In summary, this article aims to focus on how the work of Luis Barragán has become an architecture symbol and national Mexican identity, legitimizing numerous works and ideals which make-up contemporary architecture. Breve nota contextualizadora A partir da segunda metade dos anos quarenta do séc. XX as formas e ideias do Movimento Moderno fundiram-se com o regional, com o autóctone, produzindo alguns dos exemplos mais sugestivos deste período.
