1 SPEAKING SKILL IMPROVEMENT MELALUI ROLE-PLAYING PADA KOMPETENSI ENGLISH FOR INSTRUCTION DI PGSD Ali Mustadi PGSD Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta aly_uny@yahoo.com; ali_mustadi@uny.ac.id Abstract The aim of this study is to increase students‟ achievement of speaking skill in the competence of English for Instruction by implementing Role Playing method in English classroom of Elementary School Teacher Education Department (PGSD). The problem related to the students‟ achievement of speaking skill and this study can be classified into a classroom action research. The finding shows that Role Playing in ESTD is able to improve students‟ achievement of speaking skill. There is a significant increasing achievement of speaking skill reached by the students. The result of speaking test of cycle 1 shows that there are seven students who got score under the interval of 3,00 and the average score is 70,58. It is still under the score of 75 where 75 is the minimum standard score, but it is better than the score of pre-test. The cycle 2 shows that there is increasing scores, in which there is no student who get under the interval of 2,50-3,00 and the average score is 76,96. It means that the students‟ achievement of speaking skill increase 6,677% although there is no students who get score in the maximum interval of 4,50–5,00. . Keywords: Speaking skill, role playing, English for instruction. 1. PENDAHULUAN Pendidikan bahasa Inggris, khususnya untuk siswa sekolah dasar (SD) di Indonesia menjadi sangat populer dewasa ini. Hal ini menjadi tugas dan tanggung jawab pendidik agar menyiapkan diri dan mendalami bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu alat komunikasi internasional termasuk sebagai bahasa pengantar dalam proses belajar mengajar di siswa SD. Prodi Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar (PGSD) mempunyai tugas mempersiapkan mahasiswanya sebagai calon guru SD yang professional yang mempunyai kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang baik, baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Hal yang disebutkan di atas mendukung kebutuhan mahasiswa akan kecakapan mengajar di Sekolah Berstandar Internasional (SBI), dimana SBI „mewajibkan‟ para guru untuk mempunyai kemampuan berbahasa Inggris terutama bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar dalam proses belajar mengajar di kelas atau English for Bilingual Instructions.
