Bangladesh Email: rupom0006@gmail.com Abstract: Greenstone digital library software is one of the most popular open source software for libraries, universities, institutions and other organizations to build and publish digital collections on the Internet and CD-ROM. Greenstone offers effective collection building with full-text searching and metadata-based browsing facilities that are attractive and easy to use. Besides, it incorporates an interface that makes it easy for people to create their own library collections. Greenstone from its beginning spreads over 90 countries and translated in 45 languages including in Bengali. Like other country some libraries in Bangladesh have already built digital library using this software and some others have taken initiative to introduce GSDL in their library. Here at first East West University implemented digital library project with this software. Now with the support of Digital Library Network in South Asia (DLNETSA) GSDL is spreading continuously. Library and IT professionals here become interested about this software. This case study describes the activities of DLNETSA and present scenario of using greenstone digital library software as library institutional repository in Bangladesh. INTRODUCTION Open source software is software that is made freely obtainable to all and its source code is also available for anyone to see and manipulate. Open source software development projects are Internet-based communities of software developers who voluntarily collaborate to develop software that they or their organizations need. Rising open source software gives effective way to create digital library function
