ABSTRACT
Objective: The present study was conducted to measure the relationship between
expressed emotions and locus of control among parents of Schizophrenia
patients.
Research Design: Ex-post Facto
Place and Duration: Lahore, October, 2007 to April, 2008
Hypotheses: It was hypothesized that (a) there would be significant relationship
between Expressed Emotions and locus of control among parents of
schizophrenics. (b) There would be significant relationship between criticism and
controllability (internal Locus of Control) among parents of schizophrenics.
Sample and Method: Purposive sampling technique was used. The parents
(including 50 mothers and 50 fathers) of diagnosed schizophrenics were taken
who had at least 3 relapses. Measures used in this study were the expressed
emotion questionnaire and Rotter’s Internal and External Locus of Control scale.
Statistics: Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to analyze relationship
between scores of EE and LOC variables and scores of Criticism and Internal
locus of control (controllability).
Results: The results depicted the gender difference and also revealed that those
patients who have high critical parents, their parents have internal locus of
control.
Conclusion: The results were correlated with the findings of previous studies.
Further comparative group researchers are required to improve the
generalization of the present study.
Key Words: Schizophrenia, expressed emotions, locus of control, parents
