This means that most translation has a function. While it must be conceded at the outset that the specific micro goal of each translation depends on a variety of factors, some of which are nonlinguistic, by far the majority of translation projects embarked upon around the world are aimed at reproducing the meaning and intent of the original source language text correctly and completely into the target language, in such a way that it would affect the target language audience the same way as the source text does on its audience. In this paper, we shall examine meaning in the sense of ‘total meaning’ as C. C. Fries (1952) called it. According to Fries “the total meaning of our utterances consists not only of the linguistic meaning—the lexical and structural meaning—but also of the social meaning.” In what follows, we will examine some key factors to consider when approaching translations, which have as the primordial goal to achieve total meaning.
