INDIA ABSTRACT Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is on the raise even in young adults in India. Though there plenty of reports from various parts of our country since 1978, the risk factors were still less known and different from that in adults. The study was conducted in SVS Medical College Hospital Mahabubnagar during 2007 – 2011 for a period of 5 years. The youngest patient was 22, males dominated with 32: 8. A total number of 1886 CAD cases admitted to ICCU of SVS Medical College Mahabubnagar. Male sex(32), smoking(24),sedentary working (6),positive family history (6), dyslipidemias (5), diabetes mellitus (2), overweight (2), were the routine risk factors. An alarmingly high 24 cases were alcohol abusers, 11 cases had anaemia. Our study emphasizes the alcohol as one of the main risk factors, followed by anemia anti-psychotic medications. Other factors like SLE, hysterectomy, nephrotic syndrome are occasionally associated with AMI. Two patients did not had any of the known risk factors. The results were reviewed with that in available literature. Key words: AMI, Young adults, risk factors INTRODUCTION: Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in very young patients have been poorly described. We therefore evaluate ACS in patients aged 30 years and younger coronary heart disease (CHD) represents the leading cause of death in adults in the western world. 1 2 Myocardial infarction (MI) is the lethal manifestation of CHD and can present as sudden death. Although MI mainly occurs in patients older than 45, young men or women can suffer MI. Fortunately, its incidence is not common in patients younger than 45 years. 3 . However the disease carries a significant morbidity, psychological effects, and financial constraints for the person and the family when it occurs at a young age. The protection offered by young age has been slowly taken away by the increased prevalence of risk factors for CHD in adolescents such as smoking, obesity, and lack of physical activity. 4 Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is very common emergency in any hospital, but the same is very rare in subjects below the age of 30. Routine causes and risk factors may not be present in a given case. We report 40 cases of AMI from SVS Medical College Mahabubnagar. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was conducted in SVS Medical College Hospital Mahabubnagar during 2007 – 2011 for a period of 5 years. This was an observation study to look into mainly the contributing factors to this calamity. All
