1 MOTOR VEHICLE MECHANIC SKILL ACQUISITION IN CURBING YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT CHALLENGES IN NIGER STATE: EFFECTIVE CAREER GUIDANCE AS A CURE MUSTAPHA, Aliyu aliyu21m@gmail.com +2348038786082 Abstract Unemployment has become a major problem that causes anxiety in the lives of youth in Niger State, causing increased violent crimes, kidnappings, restiveness and socially antisocial behaviour. Youth unemployment is devastating to both the individual and the society as a whole both psychologically and economically. The paper examines the issue of youth unemployment and looks at potential interventions such as effective career guidance, technical and vocational education as well entrepreneurship education in motor vehicle mechanic. The following recommendations were made among which include given the evolution of industrial and labour laws, there should be regular and systematic evaluation of teaching curricula, taking into account the industrial and employers’ requirements and the roles, responsibilities, and ethical obligations of employees in the industry should be adequately communicated to the students during training by focusing on career guidance and counseling, support and introduction of entrepreneurship education into the school curriculum. Background of the Study Motor Vehicle Mechanics (MVM) are set of technicians who apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain all types of automobiles (CIP 2010). They make use tools to adjust, test, diagnose service and completely repair any fault on the motor vehicle for safe and reliable operation according to the manufacturer’s specification. In large shops, they may specialize in repairing, rebuilding and servicing specific sections of the vehicles such as the braking system, steering and suspension system among others. In smaller shops, they may work on a wider variety of repairs jobs. MVM begin a job by reading the work order and examining a vehicle to locate the cause of faulty operation and determine the appropriate repair.
