11 SURVEY IN THE TRAPRAIN LAW ENVIRONS PROJECT AREA INTRODUCTION This chapter contains an overview of the survey work lying behind the excavations undertaken in the TLEP study area. The overview is primarily based on the aerial survey and mapping of plough- levelled sites recorded as cropmarks undertaken by RCAHMS and the geophysical surveys carried out Chapter 2 Survey in the Traprain Law Environs Project area DAVID C COWLEY, DUNCAN HALE, FRASER HUNTER and KEVIN H J MACLEOD by the TLEP, but consideration is also given to the results of arable fieldwalking. The present study has provided an opportunity to compare the information on sites generated by the methods outlined above in a region where often-complex geology has a direct impact on the character of sites revealed as cropmarks and through geophysics. The subsequent excavation programme has provided further depth to Figure 2.1 Aerial view looking north-east over the central part of the TLEP study area, with Traprain Law in the foreground (DP026198, Crown copyright: RCAHMS)
