O nobre sacerdócio da verdade: reflexões sobre o ofício do historiador no Brasil oitocentista The noble priesthood of the truth: reflections on the historian’s craft in the in the 19th century Brazil Maria da Glória de Oliveira 1 Resumo: O artigo aborda os modos como eram concebidas as tarefas do historiador no Brasil oitocentista, no momento de institucionalização da pesquisa e da escrita da história nacional com ambições cientificas. Nesse contexto, o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro apresenta-se como observatório privilegiado da constituição da chamada historiografia imperial. A hipótese central é a de que as garantias de credibilidade das obras historiográficas estariam na adequação aos ideais de uma performance virtuosa. O amor à verdade, a abnegação e a imparcialidade designavam virtudes inatas em certos homens de letras, funcionando como índices reguladores do ofício do historiador. Palavras-chave: Historiografia brasileira; Historiador; Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro Abstract: The article discusses the ways in which the historian’s tasks were designed in the 19th century Brazil, at the time of institutionalization of the research and writing of national history with scientific ambitions. In this context, the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute presents itself as a privileged observatory of the constitution of imperial historiography. The central hypothesis is that the guarantees of credibility of historical works would be in the adequacy to ideals of a virtuous performance. The love of truth, abnegation and impartiality designated innate virtues in certain men of letters, functioning as regulators indexes of the historian profession.
