CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background Culture is not an original English word. It is taken from Latin word “cultura” which means cultivating. Culture is the traditions in a group of people, but it is not only the traditions. It contains something that is ingrained in people; something that is hard to change. It will need years to change, but it is possible. It is something that ‘planted’ in people minds, thoughts, behaviors, and everything in their life. E. B. Tylor (1871) said, “Culture or Civilization, taken in its wide ethnographic sense, is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.” (p. 1). Culture does exist in every single thing, such as people, tribes, and countries. Indonesia is a country with many islands and has groups of ethnic, languages, customs and culture. Every island has different culture. Moreover, people in one tribe have different culture, based on the place they live. As a part of Indonesia, Lampung has its own customs and culture, including traditional wedding dress. And, there is a meaning in every accessories and jewelries of Lampung’s wedding dress. Jewelries have a strong connection with customs, culture, and people’s belief. B. Objectives This paper is written as a part of Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) I subject, and also as local culture preservation. Furthermore, it is also to improve 1
