Using a Wiki to Produce Journalistic Best Practices Jennifer Hoewe, Brian J. Bowe & Geri Alumit Zeldes Courses: Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Islamic Studies, Religious Studies Objectives: To facilitate critical thinking when analyzing news media, and to produce a wiki-based best practices document to encourage better reporting, specifically on Muslims and Islam Rationale The difficult nature of reporting accurately and objectively on religion, coupled with world events and discrimination against Muslims, motivated a pilot course called ‘‘Reporting on Islam.’’ The activity detailed here addressed two issues*improving the coverage of religion, specifically Islam, in the news media and using communication technology to encourage critical thinking in the analysis of journalistic routines and news media texts, ultimately producing better news coverage. This type of critical thinking involved having students consider how news media is constructed and the effects news media can have on its consumers. It is important to note that while this course addressed reporting on Muslims and Islam, its basic structure can be applied to the instruction of reporting on any topic. While this technique was used for a class on the reporting on Islam, it also could be used for classes on other marginalized populations. On a deeper level, it could be adapted for any type of reporting that is complicated, controversial, or sensitive. Health reporting, environmental reporting, and courses that discuss the use of sensitive government material are examples of topics that have a potent mix of ethical and factual issues at their core. As this particular example illustrates, collective writing and reflection, coupled with the production of best practices, is an effective way of inculcating student journalists with professional standards.
