“They embraced his feet, saying …” 165 “They embraced his feet, saying …” s´a? pen aäazum and s´a? pen ezebum as idioms of loyalty and defiance in Sargonic by Ekaterina Markina – Moscow In his recent contribution to the Aage Westenholz anniversary volume, Andrew George has offered a highly persuasive interpretation of Erridu- pizir A ii 13–26 1 . According to George, the passage in question features an idiomatic expression s´a ? pam in napas´tim s´akanum “to place a foot at one’s throat”, describing a triumph over a defeated enemy. It seems that this is not the only s´a ? pum-based idiom found in Erridu- pizir’s inscriptions 2 , as the passage from the second monumental inscrip- tion of this ruler 3 shows: 1 A.
