The reality of life and her status made her constantly frustrated, miserable, and ungrateful. She would spend hours and minutes daydreaming a life of comfort, wealth and honour. One day, her husband comes home proudly holding an invitation to a party that is being given by his superior, the minister of public instruction. Instead of feeling delighted, she instantly throws it and begins to cry . Her husband was kind enough to understand her, gave her money for a dress and asked her to borrow jewels from Madame Forestier. The night of the party was intoxicated by the attention and has an overwhelming sense of self- satisfaction but quickly fell apart when the necklace got lost. They worked in ten miserable years just to pay all their financial debts just to find out that the necklace is fake.
