In relation with society, Hymes (1962) proposes a theory named ethnography SPEAKING. This theory tends to analyze the relation between culture and language as the starting point. Hymes’ SPEAKING model treats language as modes of speech according to the ways in which they construct and reflect social life within particular speech communities. This paper aims at analyzing Hosni Mubarak’s and Muammar Qaddafi’s speeches using SPEAKING analysis. The speeches by Mubarak and Qaddafi are chosen because they gave the speech in certain situations which can interpret the social life in Egypt and Libya. Based on the analysis, Mubarak and Qaddafi employ the different strategy in SPEAKING which shows the different society reflected by the speeches. Key terms: speech, ethnography, community 1. Introduction At the beginning of 2011, Egypt and Libya face political turmoil. The citizens in both countries demand the political change. Egypt has been led by Hosni Mubarak for more than 30 years.
