Zusammenfassung: Ohne Emotion keine Nation. Davon war die Nationsforschung des 19. Jahrhunderts ebenso überzeugt wie es die heutige ist. Gemeinsam ist ihnen auch, dass sie die Wirkungsmacht nationaler Gefühle theoriefern im Sinne einer common-sense-Psychologie vor- aussetzen, nicht aber empirisch analysieren. Dies wird im ersten Abschnitt an Autoren aus den Natur-, Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften gezeigt. Anschließend wird an zwei Briefserien deut- scher Bildungsbürger aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg untersucht, wie in einer Zeit, in der die Nation als Letztinstanz auftritt, der private Raum sich gegen die nationalemotionale Hochrüstung im öffentlichen Raum sperrt. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse in einige allgemeine Folgerungen für eine Emotionsforschung des Nationalen umgesetzt. Research was just as convinced of this in the nineteenth cen- tury as it is today. Common to both is also the fact that they assume an eficacy of national feel- ings in a theory-free manner, in the sense of a common-sense psychology, which is not empiri- cally investigated. This will be shown using authors from natural, social and humanities sciences in the irst section of the paper. Following on from this, two series of letters from the German bourgeoisie during World War One will show how, at a time when the nation presented itself as the ultimate authority, private space bars itself against the national-emotional “armament” in the public arena. The paper will close using the results to formulate some consequences for research- ing the nexus between nation and emotion.
