Research instruments used in PhD main study invesgang how experienced online learners self- direct their learning in FutureLearn courses (MOOC) These are the three research instruments used: 1. Online survey quesons (pre-course): used to get online learning background and experience from learners + an idea of their learning intenon 2. Learning logs (during course): used to get an idea of which type of direcon their learning is given, why and how. To get an idea of influencing factors. 3. Interview quesons (post-course): capturing reflecons on their learning process aſter the course has ended. Online survey questions These pre-learning log quesons will provided a basis for selecng research parcipants that can be considered experienced online learners (= learners that had prior online learning experience, either in formal or in informal – self-taught - contexts). Survey questions Thank you for your willingness to become a research parcipant in this study. Please fill in the following online survey quesons. These quesons will allow the researcher of this study to get addional insight in your prior online learning experience, as well as in your expectaons of your FutureLearn course. 1. What is your prior online learning experience? (Mulple choice: no prior experience, 1 year or less online learning experience, less than 3 years online learning experience, less than 5 years online experience, more than 5 years online learning)? 2. What type of online learning do you have experience with? (Mulple answer: MOOC, online learning, distance educaon course, learning experience by self-organised learning to stay on top of my field of interest, learning online from my network, self-taught online learning on random subjects, other) 3. What is your reason for registering for this parcular course (Mulple answer: professional interest, personal interest, learning need, other)? 4. What do you expect to get out of this course? (Open queson) Learning log template Before providing you the actual learning log quesons, some addional informaon and instrucons are offered. In case this informaon is unclear or you have any quesons concerning the research, do not hesitate to mail the researcher of this study Inge de Waard ( inge.dewaard@open.ac.uk ). Learning log instructions: Frequency for filling in the learning logs. From Week 2 of your FutureLearn course, and from there on for every second week unl the end of your FutureLearn course (i.e. Week 2, Week 4, and Week 6), you are kindly asked to fill in two
