W zależności od klimatu politycznego, filozofii lub panującej religii ciało było stawiane na piedestale lub ze wstydem ukrywane pod warstwą odzieży i brudu. Ciała kobiet, istot odmiennych od mężczyzn i przez wieki im podległych, były poddawane szczególnym represjom i nigdy do końca nie należały do kobiet. Dzisiejsze dziewczęta i kobiety są nieustannie indoktrynowane i oceniane przez media, kreatorów mody, lekarzy, rodziny znajomych i nieznajomych na temat tego jak powinny wyglądać. Szczególnie młode kobiety mogą mieć problemy z kształtowaniem własnej fizyczności, ponieważ z różnych stron słyszą sprzeczne rady: kobiety powinny być wychudzone/przypominać kształtem klepsydry, kobietom nie wolno uprawiać niektórych sportów/kobiety powinny uprawiać jakiś sport,
