Costaceae is used in Brazilian folk medicine in urinary affections and for expelling urinary stones 1,2 . Pharmacological evaluation of the antiurolithiatic activity of the water extract of this plant in rats confirmed the folk information 3 . A previous phytochemical study on C. spiralis has revealed the occurrence of sterols and furostanol glycosides 4 . As part of our ongoing investi- gation for the chemistry of Costus spp growing in Brazil 5-8 , here we report on the isolation and characterization from the leaves of C. spiralis of a new flavonol Ž. diglycoside, 3,5-dihydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxyflavone 3-O-neohesperidoside 1 .
