BY Dr. Oruonye Emeka Daniel ABSTRACT Resettlement has been a thorny issue all over the World. Resettlement may cause severe long-term hardships, impoverishment and environmental damage unless appropriate measures are carefully planned and carried out. This study examines the problems of rehabilitation in the Lake Chad resettlement scheme of Nigeria. Data were generated from field observation, interviews and secondary materials. Findings from the study shows that after 5 years of the resettlement scheme, the resettled people have not been properly rehabilitated as a result of non- payment of compensation, non provision of shelter and farmlands. This study recommends the payment of compensation to members of the host communities and the resettled people so as to facilitate their rehabilitation in the resettlement sites.
