Moze COE, santoshsandanshiv@yahoo.com ABSTRACT In this paper,an attempt is made to study the effect of noise and vibration on muffler. Noise pollution created by engines becomes a vital concern in residential areas. The main source of vibration and noise in an engine are exhaust noises. This pointed towards need of reducing the same and hence it resulted in research on upsurge of muffler performance. The present paper discuss acoustic performance of a reactive muffler with side outlet using FEM and analytical approach. Here two loud method used for experimentation work and its results compared with analytical and FEM results as transimission loss point of view. Keywords: Mufflers, Reactive Mufflers, Noise, Vibration, transmission loss, FEM, two load method. INTRODUCTION Gas combustion from an internal combustion engine will flow through the exhaust pipe which consists mainly of clamps connected to an engine. The internal force from the combustion pressure causes vibration and noises which propagate through the exhaust pipe. The noise might have a different type of characteristic of vibration modes affected by idle shake and interior noise of the vehicle. Normally, the engine vibrations are transmitted to the exhaust pipe and they are divided into two categories first longitudinal and second is bending vibration. The exhaust pipe is subjected to several stresses most of which are due to vibration. These vibrations will then reduce a fatigue life to the system. It is therefore necessary to study the vibration in the exhaust pipes, hence the silencer. The exhaust gases coming out from engine are at very high speed and temperature. Silencer has to reduce noise, vibration. While doing so it subjected to thermal, vibration and fatigue failures which cause cracks. So it is necessary to analyze the vibration which would further help to pursue future project to minimized crack, improving life and efficiency of silencer. One of the objectives when designing a new automobile silencer is to lengthen its durability period, which can be measured in terms of its life span, mileage and efficiency. The paper will discuss the various reasons of exhaust noise created in environment by Automobiles. Various types of mufflers and their usefulness in reducing the vibration and noise of the automobiles. Also experimental setup for various processes to reduce the effect of vibration on vehicles. Here is the discussion about the enormous ways of diminish the consequences of fluctuations in locomotives. MUFFLER The main Components in engine exhaust system are as follows Exhaust manifolds or EKE Catalytic converters Muffler Resonator Pipes and tubing Here muffler is subjected to study. A Muffler is a device for reducing the amount of noise emitted by the exhaust of an internal combustion engine. The principle of automobile muffler is the exhaust pipe is made up of two different lengths of pipe structure, the two pipes to separate intersection again. Since the two pipe length difference value equal to the car from the sound of half of the wavelength, make two columns of sound un a superposition interference occurs when the offset each other and weakens the intensity of sound, and so to reduce the effect of noise. Figure 1 Constuction Details of Reactive Muffler[4] The various types of mufflers used in automobiles are given as below: 1. Baffle type 2. Resonance type 3. Wave cancellation type 4. Combined resonance and absorber type 5. Absorber type mufflers 6. Reactive type mufflers
