Abstract-Education has been considered as the vital part of life for
all. Classroom teaching has taken immediate leap since its
inception. In many parts of the world steps are taken by the
universities to improve the efficacy in classroom teaching through
new technologies. This paper is the compilation of different new
media technologies used in the classroom teaching. The media
technologies include consumer technologies, enabling technologies,
social media technologies, visualization technologies, digital
strategies and learning technologies. The paper is premised on a
review of the extant literature on different new media technologies
used in classroom teaching in higher education. It addresses the
advantages and challenges of different new media technologies in
classroom teaching. Building on the review, the paper identifies
essential new technologies for Higher Education. This paper also
highlights different classroom teaching pedagogy and innovative
methods for teaching. This paper concludes that the common major
problems of the new media technology are bandwidth allocation
and awareness among the teachers and students. The paper is
mainly useful for teachers to know about the different emerging
technologies used in classroom teaching.
Keywords- New media technology; Classroom Teaching;
Adaptability; Integrated Learning Programs.
I. INTRODUCTION
A famous quote says:
I am not a fan of technology. I’m a fan of pedagogy, of
understanding how people learn and the most effective
learning methods. But technology enables some exciting
changes. (Donald A. Norman). Education plays an important
role in country like India. As the technology is changing from
with time, higher education has taken a major leap from old
teaching pedagogy to new teaching pedagogy. Many
Universities have taken many steps to change the teaching
pedagogy by implementing new technology. Many new
media technologies have been discovered and invented for
improving the higher education.
Many teachers and students can be seen moving from
content center to process center. Many technologies arebeing
used for learning and teaching inside the classrooms. New
Media Technology has improved communication skills and
alsoabridged the gap between students and teachers. This has
enabled students and teachers to learn from anywhere and
anytime by using different technological tools.
New technologies and ways of learning can significantly
change education of the future. Internet allows people to
search through digital knowledge and connect people to
teachers and experts all across the world. Textbooks can
become more interactive through internet. Students will be
able to get coursework from whichever university they choose,
and courses will be collaborative and public. These changes
will allow universities to teach anyone away from the
classroom.
II. EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES USED IN HIGHER
EDUCATION
According to New Horizon and New Consortium Report
2014, new media technologies are broadly classified as the
consumer technologies, digital strategies, learning
technologies, social media technologies, visualization
technologies, enabling technologies.
A. Consumer Technologies
These are tools served as learning aids and be quite
adaptable for use on campuses. These technologies find their
ways onto campuses because these technologies are very
popular among teachers and students.
The technologies include in this category are:
a) Mobile Apps
b) Tablet Computing
c) Telepresense
d) Wearable Technology
a) Mobile Apps
As we knownowadays, smartphones and mobile phones
are found in every hand of students and teachers. According to
Mckinsey Report, mobile learning would grow to 45 per cent
more by year 2020. Many universities have already changed
their teaching pedagogy and have focused on effective use of
mobile phones in the learningprocess. Earlier mobile phone
technology was used at school level, now it has also entered
into higher education. The trend of existing mobile phones’
development is that they are getting smarter (hence the
nickname smart phone) and are becoming more user-friendly.
Litchfield offered the definition of smart phone in 2010 as a
phone that “it runs with an open operating system and is
permanently connected to the Internet”. Today’s smart phones
are just like Personal Computers and have the touch effect.
The internet connectivity allows users to stay informed and
has unlimited services available onfinger points.
