PENDAHULUAN Sejak puluhan tahun, bahkan sebelum Indonesia merdeka pondok pesantren di Indonesia sudah diperbincangkan para ahli dan peneliti dalam berbagai disiplin ilmu. Secara sosiologis, kehadiran pondok pesanten di tengah-tengah masyarakat Indonesia telah memberikan konstribusi yang besar bagi keberlangsungan pendidikan di Indonesia. Berbagai kompleksitas yang ada di pesantren, seperti visi, misi, tujuan, sasaran, kurikulum, metode dan pendekatan dalam proses belajar mengajar, manajemen pengelolaan, sarana prasarana, tata letak lingkungan, kebersihan, ketertiban, keindahan sampai kepersoalan kemimpinan sang Kyai dalam tradisi pesantren di dalamnya menjadi bahan kajian para ahli, peneliti dan pemerhati . Kajian para ahli dan peneliti tersebut pada umumnya mengatakan, bahwa berbagai komponen yang ada di pesantren tersebut masih belum menggambarkan cita-cita ideal ajaran Islam. Nurcholis Madjid misalnya, melihat tentang lingkungan, penghuni atau santri, kurikulum, kepemimpinan, dan alumni pesantren secara umum belum menggembirakan.
