Promote Communication in Health and Social Care Explain how communication affects relationships in the work setting (1.2) When communicating in the workplace it is important to ensure the communicated content is relevant and valid, by doing so this promotes good working practice and enable you to build strong professional relationships. Good communication also shows a level of professionalism and so can not only make the patients feel at ease and colleagues but can also influence one’s self in further progression. Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication (2.2) Factors to include when trying to promote effective communication can include, Disabilities - Disabilities such as hearing loss, impaired vision, mobility problems or speech impairment can affect effective communication. Proper communication methods should be known and we should be pre-aware of these before communicating with the people with a disability or different health issues. Cultural Differences Communication differences can result from differences in culture. In some cultures, children are not allowed to speak in front of adult and some kind of body gesture, eye contact, facial expression and touch are inappropriate. Environment: Environment is one of the most important factors to consider as well. Ensure the lights, air, temperature; noise, crowd, safe and comfortability are in correct measure before trying to establish effective communication. How might people from different backgrounds use or interpret communication methods in different ways? (3.1) People from different backgrounds may have different beliefs to ours they may not like verbal communication, they may not be able to communicate at all (due to language difficulties, mental health / learning disabilities or even physical difficulties) or may just choose not to communicate (religious or ethical reasons), our job is to break any barriers to communication and to promote effective communication where possible to all.
