basis of the number of links to a site divided by the total number of webpage in that website. Ingwersen (1998) defined three types of WIF: internal, external, overall. For internal WIF, the numerator is the number of self-link i.e. links within the website; external WIF, the numerator is the number of external inlinks i.e. links coming to a website from other websites; for overall WIF, numerator is the total links i.e. both self-links and external inlinks. For all the cases, the denominator is the same i.e. the total number of web pages. Since all these three WIF calculations do not give significant results because of internal inlinks problem. SCOPE & LIMITATION OF THE STUDY The study included 19 Universities representing entire Sri Lanka. The advanced search facility of AltaVista was used for data collection. Data collection was conducted to retrieve the links as well as the web presence of the included universities. Variability of search engine results and the unavailability of some university web sites is the limitation of the research. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Before conducting this study we made a literature review, to bridge the gap between the research all ready and yet to be done. Thomas & Willett (2000) made a webometric analysis for the INTRODUCTION In current days an escalating hard work has been made to explore the temperament and properties of Web by using contemporary informatics methodologies to academic universities websites. The studies on hyperlink analysis, performance analysis, ranking of Web have been named as Webometrics by Almind and Ingwersen (1997). The aspirer of webometrics is to recognize pattern of interlinking among web creators, which is very alike to bibliometrics. Basically, hyperlink analysis is the process of building up networks of interconnected objects through various relationships in order to discover patterns and trends. The main tasks of hyperlink analysis are to extract, discover, and link together from vast amounts of data sources, to represent and evaluate the significance of the related evidence, and to learn patterns to guide the extraction, discovery, and linkage of entities. Hyperlink analysis helps to find out the nature of web impact of academic web sites, which have been carried out using dataset of universities in West Bengal. Various webometric indicators like Simple Web Impact Factors (WIF), number of web pages, WIF- self-links and WIF-external links were calculated to rank the universities. The Web Impact Factor (WIF) was developed by Peter Ingwersen (1998) to measure the impact of a website by the number of links it receives. Generally, WIF is calculated on the 77 Abundant research has been done on webometrics regarding the control of websites on each other and the trustworthiness of Web Impact Factor (WIF) as a quantitative instrument to demonstrate the visibility and brunt of websites. The main intention of this investigation is to learn the impact of 19 universities spread over the country of Sri Lanka on the web. Consequently, total number of web pages and links into every university were calculated by advance search skill of AltaVista search engine. On the whole, inlink and self-link WIFs for all website were calculated. In wrapping up the universities ranked according to these parameters. The outcome demonstrates that The universities of Srilanka are possessing varied domains for their home pages namely .ac .net and .lk but most of them (89.47%) prefer the sub level domain like .ac, University of Colombo, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Peradeniya ranked one by possessing highest web pages, inlinks and selflinks respectively. University of the Visual & Performing Arts of Sri Lanka topped one for web impact factor for inlinks, The Open University of Sri Lanka ranked one for web impact factor for selflinks and here once again university of Colombo is first in the WISER ranking.
