Silver-gilt Bowl from Burial-mound B at Prokhorovka
Mikhail Yu. Treister*
Abstract
Analysis of the shape, decoration and dimensions of a bowl from Prokhorovka provides grounds
for assigning it a date in the second half of the 4
th
century BC, most probably one soon after the
middle of that century. Despite the similarity as regards the shape and proportions of the Prokho-
rovka bowl to the so-called “Achaemenid” bowls of the Macedonian type, the measurements and
decoration of the vessel published here probably indicate that it had been manufactured in a
different centre of production, which it is not possible at this stage to specify.

he authors of the latter concluded
that the bowl was representative of a Macedonian type of Achaemenid bowl,
which appeared in the middle of the 4
th
century BC. hey pointed out that
unlike most of the known bowls belonging to the said group, the Prokhorovka
bowl had a smooth lower part not decorated with vertical fluting. his, in
their opinion, provided grounds for classifying the bowl as belonging to a
transitional group between the Achaemenid prototypes and the Macedonian-
type bowls and made it possible to date the bowl from Prokhorovka to the
middle or third quarter of the 4
th
century BC. he decoration of the bowl in
the form of three-strand plaiting enabled the scholars to suggest that the bowl
had been made in one of the production centres of the Eastern Mediterranean.
