DEVELOPING SUPPLEMENTARY ENGLISH VOCABULARY GAMES FOR THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 SINGARAJA Permadi, K. S., Nitiasih, P.K., Budasi, I. G. Program Studi Bahasa Inggris, Program Pascasarjana UniversitasPendidikan Ganesha Singaraja, Indonesia e-mail: {satya.permadi, kerti.nitiasih, gede.budasi}@pasca.undiksha.ac.id Abstract This study aimed at developing games which are needed in the teaching of vocabulary for the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Singaraja, Research and Development (R&D) design proposed by Sugiyono (2010) was employed in this study. This study used various instruments such as observation sheet, interview guide, scoring rubric, questionnaires, and test to gather the data during developing supplementary English vocabulary games. The material developed in this study was based on the criteria of good material proposed by Tomlinson. The results of the study showed that 33 games were developed and each game has its own theme, and there were 5 themes developed. The quality of the developed supplementary English vocabulary games is good based on the result of the expert judgment and the result of questionnaires. The supplementary English vocabulary games was effective to support seventh grade students’ vocabulary based on the result of statistical analysis on the test. The post-test result was significantly higher than the pre-test scores. Thus, the supplementary English vocabulary games is recommended to be used as supplementary material to support seventh grade students’ vocabulary. INTRODUCTION Vocabulary is an important language aspect that should be mastered by the students in learning English regardless the students' levels or grades. In line with this, Decarrico in Celce-Murcia (2001) states that vocabulary learning is a central to language acquisition, whether the language is first, second, or foreign language. In addition Dees (2003) states that if students possess an extensive and effective vocabulary, they can improve their performance in school on achievement and attitude tests and they can communicate more effectively with others. In other words, by having large vocabulary it will help students to express their ideas and thoughts. Therefore, in teaching a language, teachers cannot neglect teaching vocabulary because a major aim of most teaching programmers is helping the students to gain a large vocabulary of useful words (Cross, 1991). Alwasilah, et al (2013) in TEFLIN book discussion which concerns with basic thoughts of 2013 curriculum, it proposed the purpose of learning English in junior high school. The purpose is to give knowledge of the language in order to make the students being able to communicate in written and spoken language. As recommended by Alwasilah et.al (2013), educational institution should not give the same emphasis on all skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) at once to easily measure the student’s knowledge.
