Rosenberg & Lynne Steinbach Received: 10 December 2013 /Accepted: 11 December 2013 /Published online: 22 January 2014 # ISS 2014 Abstract From June 28th to 29th, 2013, the Argentinian ISS Outreach Program took place in collaboration with the Centro de Diagnóstico Dr. Enrique Rossi in the city of Buenos Aires. A total of 690 participants attended. In the following report, we analyze the actual radiologic situation in this South Amer- ican country. Outreach programs in a country such as Argen- tina are extremely valuable, as they provide a great opportu- nity for physicians that cannot travel overseas an attend interna- tional meetings such as RSNA, International Skeletal Society, or ARRS. Keywords ISS Outreach Program . Argentina The Argentinian ISS Outreach Program was planned in col- laboration with the Centro de Diagnóstico Dr. Enrique Rossi in the city of Buenos Aires, from June 28th to 29th, 2013. A total of 690 participants attended the program, with an average of 350 participants per day. Orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, technologists, medical students, and residents and fellows in radiology and orthopedics were counted among the at- tendees. There was no charge for meeting registration. The audience was very enthusiastic and the exchange of opinions between radiologists and orthopedic surgeons during the roundtables at the end of each section added a great learning experience to the program. Members of the ISS Outreach team included Dr. Lynne Steinbach from the University of California San Francisco and the current president-elect of ISS as well as Dr. Zehava Sadka Rosenberg and Dr. Jenny Bencardino from the New York University Langone Medical Center and the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. Others speakers invit- ed to participate were Dr. Luis Cerezal from Diagnóstico Médico Cantabria, Santander, Spain, and Dr. Gabriel Aguilar from Centro de Diagnóstico Dr. Enrique Rossi, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Some of the lectures were given in Spanish and others in English with simultaneous translation to Spanish. The meeting took place at the Hilton Hotel in Puerto Madero. Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina. Ap- proximately 3 million people live in the city of Buenos Aires and 12 million counting its outskirts. Argentina has a total population of 41.09 million people, with 93 % living in urban areas [1]. More than a quarter of the population lives in Buenos Aires [2]. Located in the southern end of South America, Argentina is bordered to the northeast by Brazil and Uruguay, on the north by Paraguay and Bolivia, to the west by Chile and on the east side by the Atlantic Ocean. Argentina is the second largest country in South America and the 8th largest in the world [3]. The national language is Spanish. Argentina distinguishes itself as a country with Eu- ropean influence as well as an ex-Spanish colony and as a haven for refugees who came from Europe after World War I and World War II. The Ministerio de Salud is the national organization re- sponsible for executing and implementing the policies and services related to health. The life expectancy in Argentina is 76 years for both sexes (Table 1). According to 2010 national census, there is one physician per 300 persons (30 per 10,000 persons); this ratio is above the average for the WHO Region of the Americas (22.9 per 10,000) [4].
