Obstet. 2012, 24: N. 4: 141-153 INTRODUCTION Sexual assault (SA) is any form of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the ex- plicit consent of the recipient of the unwanted sexual acts (1). It also includes all cases in which the individual, even if never physically touched, is exposed to an inappropriate sexu- al content or relationship with the abuser. SA is a worldwide problem that has not yet been sufficiently acknowledged or report- ed, as confirmed by analyses and studies car- ried out at different levels and in different contexts (2). In particular, sexual abuse in children is a problem of epidemic propor- tions, affecting children of all ages, socioeco- nomic levels, and cultural backgrounds: of the 3 million cases of maltreatment of chil- dren, approximately 20% are reported as sex- ual abuse (3). Sexual assault is a worldwide problem that has not yet been sufficiently acknowledged, as confirmed by analyses and studies carried out at different levels and in different contexts. Internationally, different approaches are taken to the collection of forensic evi- dence and to the clinical and psychological treatment of alleged victims. Italian law n.96, 1996, foreseeing norms regarding rape and abuse, finally gave signifi- cant relevance to sex crimes. In 2004, the European Commission for Justice Internal Affairs and Social Politics promoted the Daphne II pro- gram to support victims of rape and abuse, and the Ve.R.S.O. project - Network integration was incorporat- ed into our daily routine, and has been activated at the Policlinico “P. Giaccone” University Hospital of Palermo. Herein, we discuss the six years experience of a multidisciplinary team regarding application of the Ve.R.S.O. project protocol in the referral centre of Palermo, using the new guidelines for standard man- agement of victims. Our results start to give a per- spective on the frequency and type of population reaching our centre. Key words: sexual abuse, operative healthcare networks, medico-legal procedures, genital trauma. SOMMARIO Il progetto Daphne II - Ve.R.S.O: un nuovo protocol- lo per la gestione delle vittime di violenza sessuale. La violenza sessuale è un fenomeno mondiale non ancora sufficientemente riconosciuto, come confer- mato dalle analisi e dagli studi condotti a diversi li- velli e in diversi contesti. In ambito internazionale, so- no usati metodi diversi per la raccolta di prove foren- si e il management clinico e psicologico delle presunte vittime. La legge italiana n.96 del 1996, che prevede delle norme in materia di stupro e abusi, ha finalmen- te conferito il giusto rilievo ai crimini sessuali. Nel 2004, la Commissione Europea per la Giustizia, Affari Interni e delle Politiche Sociali ha promosso il programma europeo “Daphne II”, a sostegno delle vittime di stupro e abusi, e il progetto Ve.R.S.O - inte- grazione di rete è stato incorporato nel nostro contesto, ed è stato attivato presso il Policlinico Universitario “P. Giaccone” di Palermo. In questa sede, discutiamo sei anni di esperienza del gruppo multidisciplinare per l’applicazione del protocollo Ve.R.S.O. nel centro di riferimento di Palermo, in base alle nuove linee guida per la gestione standardizzata delle vittime di abuso sessuale. I nostri risultati provano, per la prima volta, a dare un’idea della frequenza e del tipo di po- polazione che afferisce al nostro centro.
