Este trabajo es parte de un proyecto de investigación sobre la orga- nización cognitiva que presentan, en relación a los verbos modales ingleses, los hablantes nativos y no nativos de la lengua inglesa. El propósito es establecer las dife- rencias en las redes semánticas de ambos grupos de sujetos. Éstas se obtienen usando el procedimiento Pathfinder (Schvaneveldt, Durso, Goldsmith, Breen, Cooke, Tucker & De Maio 1985; Schvaneveldt, Durso & Dearholt 1989; Schvaneveldt 1990; Thompson, Gomez & Schvaneveldt 2000) que proporciona redes empíricas con información rela- tiva a cómo organizan los sujetos el material que se estudia. Con los datos obtenidos se puede inferir los criterios usados por los sujetos en la organización. Los resultados de esta investigación muestran que ambos grupos de sujetos organizan los conceptos de distinta forma. Los nativos organizan el material siguiendo criterios semánticos, mientras que los sujetos no nativos lo hacen de acuerdo con principios semánticos, for- males y gramaticales. PALABRAS CLAVE. This paper is a part of a research project on the cognitive organization which native and non-native speakers of English present with regard to modal verbs in English. Our aim in this study is to establish the difference between the semantic networks of both groups of subjects. These networks have been obtained by using the Pathfinder procedure (Schvaneveldt, Durso, Goldsmith, Breen, Cooke, Tucker & De Maio 1985; Schvaneveldt, Durso & Dearholt 1989; Schvaneveldt 1990; Thompson, Gomez & Schvaneveldt 2000) which provides empirical networks with information about how subjects organize the material under research. It is possible to infer from the data obtained the criteria used by subjects in their organization patterns. The results of this investigation show that both groups of subjects organize the concepts differently. Native speakers follow mainly semantic criteria, while non-native speakers seem to follow semantic but also formal and grammatical principles. KEYWORDS.
