Spatial and Temporal Relations in Michael Learns to Rock’s 25 Minutes Lyrics: a Semiotic Analysis Deviana Kurniawati Student, Diponegoro University This paper is aimed to identify the spatial and temporal relations in a song entitled 25 Minutes by a Danish band: Michael Learns to Rock (MLTR). The song was included in an album entitled Colours released in 1993. The analysis that is carried out is its syntagmatic dimension which consists of spatial relations and temporal relations. Introduction We communicate by multiple various signs that are used systematically every day. One sign that is primarily used is language—in which morpheme as the smallest meaning unit. In its manifestation, language is used in many kinds of form whether it’s oral or verbal, auditory or visual—or both of them. As the most systematic and complex sign system, language thus becomes one of the biggest parts in human lives. Many cultural products literature and non-literature, fiction and non-fiction exist until now. Novels, plays, films, and many more kinds of texts are growing up in numbers. Song is one of the ‘language products’ or texts that can also be analyzed in terms of semiotics. In other words, its lyrics could be identified as signs system. Thus we can identify them both syntagmatically and paradigmatically. In this paper, I will analyze a song entitled 25 Minutes by MLTR, a Danish band that is quite popular in their era in 90s. They had many albums within 1990 until 2014. The song I am going to analyze is included in their album released in 1993, Colours. I will only focus on its syntagmatic dimension that involves spatial relations and temporal relations.
