INTRODUCTION
This review covers fundamental developments in liquid
chromatography during the period of December 1987 through
approximately December 1989. This year for the first time
there are separate reviews on instrumentation and size ex-
clusion chromatography; this review is of important devel-
opments in the chemistry of the separation process. The
primary searching methods for this work have been CAS
Online and CA Selects. Each author has supplemented these
with search methods of their own.
This is not meant to be a comprehensive review of all
published papers during this time period; rather, we have tried
to select those papers which we feel are significant develop-
ments. We have lar restricted the covered material to the
readily accessible E language literature. Comments and
suggestions concerning this review are welcomed and should
be sent to the first author (J.G.D.).
A. BOOKS
Whe:t:e possible in this section, reviews are cited along with
the published book. A general book on liquid chromatograp'hy
was authored by Gilbert (AI). A volume of the Wlley
Chemical Analysis series devoted to modern LC was edited
by Brown and Hartwick (A2) and reviewed (A3). A book on
practical LC originally in German was translated and updated
(A4) and reviewed (A5). The fifth volume of Horvath's series,
High Performance Liquid Chromatography: Advances and
Perspectives, appeared (A6) as did the 28th volume of the
Advances in Chromatography series (A7), and both were
reviewed (A8, A9). A book devoted to method development
was published (AlO) and reviewed (All), as was a book de-
voted to troubleshooting LC systems (A12, A13).
Books devoted to individual techniques or applications of
liquid chromatography are cited in the sections corresponding
to those techniques.
B. REVIEWS AND SYMPOSIA PROCEEDINGS
Several reviews appeared during this review period.
A special issue of Chemical Reviews was devoted to chro-
matography and had several papers devoted to liquid chro-
matography (B1). Kirkland reviewed liquid-phase separation
techniques, LC (B2). Schoemnakers and Mulholland
gave an overview or method development in liquid chroma-
tography (B3), and Majors reportea the results of a survey
of column usage in LC (B4). Ahuja reviewed trace and ul-
tratrace analysis in LC (B5) and the development of high-
