NIGERIA AND THE EXTERNALITIES OF GLOBALIZATION Peter W. Naankiel 1 , Chollom J. Christopher 2 , Abdullahi S. Sani 3 , Daniel D. Dalyop 4 , Adihikon T. Angyetsokwa 5 , ABSTRACT The catchphrase globalization has gained currency since the 1880’s and especially after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In fact, it has become so common that the word in itself means different things to different people depending on various factors. However, with the dichotomous nature of the international system which now has the western countries on one hand third world countries on the other, Nigeria has in modern times become trapped within this complex web of unfolding historical phenomenon with its advantages (benefits) and disadvantages. This study surveys globalization and its general impact on Nigeria. The study will attempt an examination of how Nigeria can benefit from the externalities of the globalization phenomenon? It is recommended that the provision and improvement of economic and social infrastructure e.g. power supply, information communication technology, transportation and education is a necessary precondition if Nigeria is to maximize its benefits of globalization.
