Productivity and Growth in Agriculture: Strategies and Interventions 243 Integrating Web-ontology in Agricultural Development Strategies Amjad Farooq 1 , Qasim Akram 1 and Muhammad Khalid Bashir 2 Abstract World Wide Web contains huge amount of agricultural data resources. In current web, it is very difficult to get and process them automatically, due to non-standardization and semantic heterogeneities; therefore we are not properly benefited from these data resources. We need to transform them into information and knowledge in order to make their maximum utilization in different strategies used in agricultural productivities. Semantic web is enabling the current web in such a way that user can quickly and easily find the information they need where as the web mining techniques can help in extracting the hidden knowledge, contained in the contents, structure and usage of this large amount of data. Web-ontology is the backbone of semantic web; it formally represents the descriptive knowledge of different concepts and their relationships in certain application domains. In current web, mostly the data is available in the form of xml documents, and there is extremely large number of these data resources, containing data in terabytes. Manual populating web-ontology from these data is very time consuming, enormous and costly. We propose a methodology to populate web-ontology from XML- documents, automatically. The key idea is, first data should be transformed in ontology instances, and then it is mined to get useful knowledge. That resultant knowledge will be more comprehensive and complete. Key Words: web-ontology, semantic web, information, XML- documents, agriculture, development Introduction Due to explosive growth in data on web without any standardization, it becomes very difficult to process and extract relevant data automatically. This situation may be handled via web-ontology, envisioned by the semantic web. Web Ontology is a way of sharing knowledge, information in large data repositories. A lot of agricultural data is available on the web such as [1] [2] [3]. As Pakistan is a agricultural country and our economy heavily depend on agriculture sector for there is a need of some proper way for using this state of art technology in agricultural information systems. As disscussed in Literature work some techniques has been proposed for using ontology based data in agriculture system. But mostly they are conceptual approaches and contains a lot of manual work. In this paper we are presenting an approach which not only efficently generates ontology based data but also cover many drawbacks like manual mapping in the previous approaches 1 Department of Computer Science and Engineering DepartmentUniversity of Engineering and Technology, Lahore – Pakistan 2 DPU, Faculty of Agri.
