Abstract The Netherlands is said to be in a culture of avoidance where there is a commitment to the idea that race or racism does not exist. Two ethnographic excerpts taken from my M.A. thesis exemplify that this culture of avoidance sustains a collective ignorance regarding racial difference and other processes of exclusion in the Netherlands, particularly among white Dutch. This article indicates that the macropolitics of racism and sexism are inherently connected to the micropolitics of bodily mobility, and argues that we need to decolonize our white Dutch minds in order to deconstruct the culture of avoidance and the culture of ignorance that is prevalent in the Netherlands. By increasing our awareness and critically reflecting on our own internalized sexism and white supremacy, we can negotiate alternatives for living with difference without needing to differentiate, exploit, commodify, or exoticize. Verschillende wetenschappers beargumenteren dat Nederland zich in een cultuur van vermijding bevindt waarin het idee heerst dat ras en racisme niet bestaan. Twee etnografische voorbeelden geven de problematiek weer hoe deze cultuur van vermijding een cultuur van onwetendheid in stand houdt, met name onder de blanke Nederlandse bevolking. Door het analyseren van onder andere dans en beweging wordt aangetoond dat de macropolitieke aspecten van racisme en seksisme onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn aan de micropolitieke aspecten van lichamelijke mobiliteit. Om de Nederlandse cultuur van vermijding en onwetendheid te deconstrueren beargumenteert het artikel dat een kritische blik op het eigen geïnternaliseerde racisme en seksisme noodzakelijk is, gevolgd door de dekolonisatie van gedachtepatronen zodat er ruimte ontstaat om op een gelijkwaardige manier met verschil te kunnen leven zonder te hoeven onderscheiden, uitsluiten, commodificeren of exoticeren.
