ISSN 1137-9669, 2000. voL 12: 177-239 Comerciantes y arquitectura en La Coruña dieciochesca: el proceso constructivo de las "Casas de Paredes" JESÚS ÁNGEL SÁNCHEZ GARCÍA Universidade de Santiago de Compostela RESUMEN La construcción de las conocidas como "Casas de Paredes" fue una de las iniciativas urbanísticas más singulares acometidas en la ciudad de A Coruña durante el período de la Ilustración, escogien- do un monumentalizado inmueble de viviendas como solución para crear un clasicista y uniforme frente marítimo hacia el puerto. En este estudio se pretende analizar el papel de los protagonistas en su planificación, desde el adinerado comerciante Benito Agar, que fue el primero en solicitar la ocu- pación de los terrenos de la Marina y pronto fue seguido de otros importantes comerciantes locales, hasta el Capitán General Pedro Martín Cermeño responsable del diseño de todo su frente, pasando por los diferentes arquitectos, ingenieros, maestros de obras y canteros que intervinieron en su edi- ficación. Así, el control de la autoridad militar aseguró que el aprovechamiento privado se conjuga- ra con los ideales Ilustrados de ornato y utilidad al servicio público. ABSTRACT The construction of the so-called "Casas de Paredes" building was one of the most remarkable town planning initiatives undertaken in the city of Corunna (La Coruña) during the Enlightenment, opting for a monumentalised residential building as the best solution to create a classicistic, uniform suc- cession of overlooking the harbour. In this study, we set out to anal y se the role of those who took a main part in its planning, from the affluent tradesman Benito Agar, who was the first to request an authorisation to occupy the plots in the area known as "La Marina", soon to be followed by other important local traders, to the Captain General Pedro Martín Cermeño, responsible for the design of the whole front, without forgetting the different architects, engineers, master builders, and masons who took part in the construction. In this way, the control of the military authorities made sure that prívate use adequately combined with the contemporaneous ideas of ornamentation and usefulness for the general good of the public.
