HOW OLD IS THE EARTH? During my time at the Secondary school, the question about the age of the planet Earth had always been in my mind. Unfortunately, all the answers that I was able to get plunged me into more confusion. The Creationists with the belief that the Universe and life originated from specific acts of divine creation claimed that the planet Earth is about 6000 years. Those practicing Hinduism believe that the current age of this Earth is 155.5 trillion years. The Muslim claimed that the age of the Earth is a third of the age of the Universe and that the age of the universe is 13.7 billion years and the age of the Earth is 4.567 billion years. From all the several beliefs, the age of the planet earth ranges between 3,616 to 23 billion years, and some even claim that the earth is infinite. However, it has been scientifically proved that that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. Cain (2016) supports this scientific claim by stating that the age of the planet Earth coincides with the age of the rest of the planets in the Solar System, as well as the Sun. The contradictions between all these claims, especially between the Creationists and the Scientists remain the bone of contention till date, and the question is that which one do we believe? Scientists Claim vs Creationists Claim While, it is more reasonable to accept the scientific claim about the age of the planet earth, the contradictions between the Creationists and the scientific evident about the age of the planet Earth where all creations have their life and subsistence still remain a concern and therefore calls for further research in order to establish which of the various religious claims to accept in the light of the scientific prove of the age of the planet Earth. From the English translation of the Quran, it was stated that "Allah created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in six days" (7:54). This is in line with that of the Bible that God created the heaven and the earth in six days (Genesis 1:1–2:3). Although, on the surface the Creationist views from the account from both the Quran and that of the Bible appear to be similar, but there are some important distinctions that need to be emphasised for proper understanding. A day is equated to 1,000 years In the Holy Quran, a day is equated to 1,000 years in Chap 22:47 “And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count”; and in Chap 32:5 “He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the
